E85 is a blended gasoline that is 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. More than a dozen vehicles can use E85 as their fuel source. Ethanol burns cleaner than gasoline, is completely renewable, and a domestically made product. The U.S. imports more than half of its oil, and the country’s overall consumption continues to grow.
Government tests have shown that E85 vehicles reduce harmful hydrocarbon and benzene emissions when compared to vehicles running on gasoline. It can also reduce carbon dioxide or CO2, which contributes to global warming.
CO2 is released during ethanol production and combustion, but it is recaptured as a nutrient for the crops that are used to make the ethanol in the first place. Unlike fossil fuel combustion, which unlocks harmful carbon that has been stored for millions of years, ethanol combustion has lower increases to the carbon cycle. Ethanol also degrades quickly in water and poses fewer risks to environment than oil or gasoline.
