Ethanol is produced when a starch, most commonly corn, is fermented. Ethanol is produced right here in Minnesota and reduces our reliance on foreign oil. Net petroleum dependence in 2016 was 25% but would have been 33% without ethanol production. In 2016, a record 15.25 billion gallons of ethanol was produced, supporting 74,420 jobs in renewable fuel production and agriculture as well as 264,756 indirect jobs. In total, the industry contributed $42 billion to the GDP, paid $9 billion in taxes and raised household income by $23 billion .
